Teacher Appreciation Week 2024

Teacher Appreciation

Introduction

Teaching is a hard job. With pressure from students, parents, and school regulators – the profession is one that demands a lot energy and passion. But at the same time, teaching is one of the most rewarding jobs you can do. Having a lasting impact on people and setting them up with the skills to become good citizens is what drives teachers all over the world. Every person whose been to school has an answer to that question: “Who was your favorite teacher?”

That’s why Teacher Appreciation Week was invented: to give thanks and appreciation for everything teachers do for us and our children.

History of Teacher Appreciation Week

The first ever Teacher Appreciation Day was held in 1953, when First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt persuaded Congress that the country there would be a specific day to recognize teachers.

Even with Roosevelt’s support, it would take another 27 years before the it became an official national day. By 1980, the National Educational Association (NEA) supported Kansas and the Indiana State Board of Education to lobby Congress and have the day recognized nationally.

On March 7th 1984, the first ever Teacher Appreciation Day was held. But after the National Parent Teacher Association pushed to expand the occasion to last a week, the first week of May has been celebrated as Teacher Appreciation Week.

When is Teacher Appreciation Week 2024?

For 2024, Teacher Appreciation Week lasts from May 6 to May 10, 2024. Since 1984, it’s always been held on the first full week of May. The celebrations will culminate on May 7th, 2024, National Teacher Appreciation Day.

How Can I Celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week?

During this week we expect teachers will receive small gifts, thank you notes and letters of appreciation. Classroom decorations are a fantastic way of expressing gratitude to teachers and recognition of their work. Schools might even organize special assemblies or events to honor teachers, with performances by students and presentations thanking teachers for their hard work and contributions to education.

Districts might stage professional development opportunities and workshops for teachers, and local communities might organize events like fundraisers or volunteer activities to support teachers and schools during the week.

Whatever you do to celebrate National Teacher Appreciation Week, make sure to express gratitude for the long hours and dedication shown by your teachers.
